Pilot built the Kakuno to make a first fountain pen feel easy, and it has become one of the most-loved starter pens in the world. The name plays on the Japanese for "to write", and every detail serves that idea: a faceted body that stays where you put it, a shaped grip that settles your fingers into place, and a tiny smiling face on the nib that tells you at a glance which way is up.
This listing is the Medium (M) nib, which gives a smoother, slightly bolder line that lets ink colour and shading show. Choose the fully clear demonstrator, which lets you watch your ink level, the understated all-grey version, or one of the soft pastel caps paired with a white barrel.
The Kakuno comes with a black Pilot cartridge so you can start writing straight away. When you're ready for colour, add a Pilot CON-40 converter and a bottle of Iroshizuku ink and the Kakuno becomes an inexpensive way to explore the whole world of fountain pen inks. It also makes a thoughtful gift for students and anyone curious about fountain pens.
